Traditions

As the parents of an almost 9 month old and an almost 3 year old, we have decided to really evaluate what traditions we want to start and which ones we want to keep. It's interesting how some cool traditions just fall into place and how some of the ones you try to create fail miserably.

My father-in-law's birthday is Christmas Eve. Yes, totally sucks to be him. Anyway, we always tried to be there for his birthday, but we also wanted to be at our own home on Christmas Eve. This was impossible the decade we lived seven hours away. But we recently moved and last year we gave it a shot.

Set the scene... late lunch at the in-laws then a 2 1/2 hour drive home through the mountains of western Pennsylvania to get home in time for the 7:00 service. You might wonder why we even tried. Especially since there was a snow storm. It clearly didn't happen. The poor toddler was hungry. Nothing was open. So we stopped in a college town on the way, found an open pizza joint (we were the only ones dining there). And now a Christmas Eve tradition - pizza for dinner.

A friend of mine told me of her childhood tradition of getting new pajamas for Christmas Eve. Then you are wearing something nice and new for Christmas Day pictures. Well, we tried that. Nice thought. We gave them a cute bath together and took pictures pre-Santa. Right after, the baby threw up all over himself. So there will be no cute new jammies for tomorrow's pictures. Maybe next year.

One tradition that I hope we don't keep is the one where we don't go to church Christmas Eve because we are traveling in a blizzard.. or because the toddler has scarlet fever.

Ahhh... traditions.

We have chinese take out for Christmas and New Year's - every year for almost 16 years now.

Hoping you can establish a better tradition than a sick young 'un. Merry Christmas!

My mom bought all of us matching plaid jammies for Christmas. You can see them on Presby's blog. New Christmas jammies on toddlers is cute. On adults, it's frightening.

My parents had a traditon to have no traditions. I'm not a fan of that approach.

Sounds like you have a good start on some good stuff...maybe next year put the PJs on when they get up! HA!!!! :)

I hope everyone is feeling better soon!

I love the pizza for dinner tradition.

The matching jammies: definitely cute on little ones. Not on rather large old and middle-aged people.

Hope your house is soon a sickness-free zone.
